jj starr film - storytelling changes the world

i believe that hard work and persistence in film-making, provides me with the ability to leave behind something greater than myself.

i believe the most important thing in my life and the most important influence that i have in this world is not my ability to mess around with a camera, but it's about who i am. it's about the mark that i hope to leave on the people to my right and to my left.

my passion is to tell stories that inspire others and I believe in the simple premise that storytelling changes the world.

WINNER: REEL CAUSE - REELSTORIES FILM FEST (Malibu, CA)
OFFICIAL SELECTION: FALLBROOK FILM FEST (Fallbrook, CA)

In june 2008 a team from Los Angeles traveled to Honduras to capture the reality that children living there are faced with. We dealt mostly with kids living just outside of Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras. The kids featured are faced with working long hours in a trash dump collecting anything that they can find to make money. The conditions of the dump are very bad and kids are often injured and/or killed. The documentary highlights a school that was created across the street from the dump in order to stop kids from working in it and receive an education

so i sat down to familiarize myself again with the footage that i got while in africa and i just began pulling clips out that i liked. i randomly put a song with the video, and had no intentions of showing this to anyone, until alec convinced me to put it on vimeo.

so this is just a short complication of some of my favorite shots from my almost 3 weeks in africa. eventually i'll be putting together some promo videos for the organization i was working with, but for now, enjoy the beauty!

so far on my many journeys through Uganda and Kenya my favorite part has been this short video.

This kid lives in the Namuwangu Slum just outside of Kampala, the capital of Uganda.

He's blind but is well known by all the people who work and live within in the slums as a "ray of sunshine". Upon meeting him he wanted to play his harmonica for us, and what follows is beautiful.

Thanks to someone he will probably never meet he was able to receive money to attend a special needs school outside of the slum.

when my roommate passed along a link containing a talk by a filmmaker regarding hard work and dedication to film, i was struck by what he challenged us to do.

the challenge was to go out and shoot a whole month of sunrises in a row and put them together in a video. we both heard the talk on september 30th and the next month was already set.

too many times we forget that with passion comes dedication and hard work. what we learned is that it's often in these small moments of beauty, that we are able to peek into the glory of an amazing God.

this is a little video on how this whole project came together

i had the amazing opportunity to help out a project called, "i am zambia" with some editing

in that process i had this idea for a video that i wanted to shoot for a "catchy" kind of promo

so i called up a very talented friend of mine, daniel de la rosa and asked him if he would be willing to head into the studio and help me create something

we started at 12 midnight, and after lots of espresso, we finished at 4,

it took 4 hours, and this is what we came up with

while spending some time with my grandma's i started to think a lot about my story, more specifically my family's story. i found a ton of 8mm rolls of film and went and got them developed. what follows is kind of a music video showing the "story" of my family. i think it's pretty cool.

What if you could fast just one meal a week, and literally save a life? Your budget doesn't change, but your lifestyle does. It's about sacrificial living - being so committed to others that we make a sacrifice of ourselves.
