DSC_0905 copy.JPG Hi, I'm JJ

i believe that hard work and persistence in film-making, provides the opportunity to leave behind something greater than yourself.

i believe the most important thing in my life and the most important influence that i have in this world is not my ability to mess around with a camera, but it's about who i am as a person.

my passion is to tell stories that inspire others and i believe in the simple premise that storytelling changes the world.

my blog is like a journal where I post all of my recent work and create conversation around storytelling, so check back often and see what I've been up to.

[awaken honduras] from JJ Starr on Vimeo.

WINNER: GRAND PRIZE - REELSTORIES FILM FEST (Malibu, CA) WINNER: REEL CAUSE - REELSTORIES FILM FEST (Malibu, CA) OFFICIAL SELECTION: FALLBROOK FILM FEST (Fallbrook, CA) In june 2008 a team from Los Angeles traveled to Honduras to capture the reality that children living there are faced with. We dealt mostly with kids living just outside of Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras. The kids featured are faced with working long hours in a trash dump collecting anything that they can find to make money. The conditions of the dump are very bad and kids are often injured and/or killed. The documentary highlights a school that was created across the street from the dump in order to stop kids from working in it and receive an education

beauty within the slum [a scene from africa] from JJ Starr on Vimeo.

so far on my many journeys through Uganda and Kenya my favorite part has been this short video. This kid lives in the Namuwangu Slum just outside of Kampala, the capital of Uganda. He's blind but is well known by all the people who work and live within in the slums as a "ray of sunshine". Upon meeting him he wanted to play his harmonica for us, and what follows is beautiful. Thanks to someone he will probably never meet he was able to receive money to attend a special needs school outside of the slum.

when my roommate passed along a link containing a talk by a filmmaker regarding hard work and dedication to film, i was struck by what he challenged us to do. the challenge was to go out and shoot a whole month of sunrises in a row and put them together in a video. we both heard the talk on september 30th and the next month was already set. too many times we forget that with passion comes dedication and hard work. what we learned is that it's often in these small moments of beauty, that we are able to peek into the glory of an amazing God. this is a little video on how this whole project came together song: "Needle and Haystack Life" by Switchfoot
